A legal agreement signed through the USFWS that pays you to permanently protect wetland areas. Restrictions include no draining, filling, leveling, or burning of protected wetland areas. In years when wetland areas are naturally dry, they can be farmed through or hayed. Wetland areas can be grazed. Can be combined with a USFWS grassland easement. No public access component. Doesn’t affect mineral rights, but minerals must be extracted in a way that doesn’t violate provisions of the easement. Staff can work with landowner to restore previously drained wetland areas. Payments are usually received in 6 months to a year. Focus on Prairie Pothole region.
